Carolina Livin': Field trip with Ethan

Today, Ethan and I were invited by our friends, the Mixsons, to the annual “ launching of the ducks.” Okay, so it’s probably not called that, but that’s basically what it is. Every year, Jim goes and picks up hundreds of ducks to release into the ponds on the farm that he runs. The ponds are protected with electric fences so the ducks have nothing to fear until they are grown and decide to fly away from the protected pond. Ethan was thrilled to see so many ducks in one spot. He was really hoping to bring one home….. just what we need!

The ducks jumped from the trailer into the rice ponds. They swim around and hide in the rice and eat it. Pretty nice life for a duck, if you ask me, until they decide to leave it…. little do they know, they’re being protected so they can grow until they’re big enough to be hunted. Poor ducks! I didn’t tell Ethan that part.Jim making sure they are all out. Bye bye ducks. They quickly paddled off into the rice pond.

After watching the ducks swim away, we spent some time in the garden. Ethan was in heaven!! Given the opportunity, I think he would spend the entire day in the garden, planting, weeding, picking, and eating! He loved picking the squash, black eyed peas and cucumbers. Then it was off to the fruit trees. Apples, peaches, and wild plums, he loved them all!!
